FAQs for NICEIC benefits

NICEIC is a certification body that provides your business with recognition that it meets the highest standards in the electrical industry. To be certified by NICEIC, you must be able to demonstrate your technical competence, commitment to quality workmanship, and compliance with the relevant electrotechnical regulations and standards.
Its easy to apply online. The application process involves submitting your details and providing evidence of your relevant qualifications and experience.

Firstly, you’ll need show evidence that you hold acceptable qualifications for your chosen scheme – such as City & Guilds or NVQ certificates – and you also need to have the requisite level of experience for the scheme you are applying for. For our electrotechnical schemes, you must have a minimum of two years' supervisory experience in the electrical industry, and you must be able to demonstrate your knowledge and expertise in the field.

You’ll also need to show you have appropriate insurance cover. This insurance must be commensurate with the risk, nature, scope, and scale of work undertaken.

In addition to this, you will need to pass an on-site assessment with one of our approved assessors. Once you have been accepted onto your chosen scheme, you will be able to access a wide range of benefits as part of your certification, including technical support and access to our highly acclaimed webinars.

Apply for NICEIC certification.

You can view our list of accepted qualifications on our scheme pages. Acceptable qualifications will vary according to the scheme you’re applying for. Core qualifications include a Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installation or equivalent and an 18th Edition Wiring Regulations qualification.
The cost of joining NICEIC depends on the type of work your business undertakes, its needs, and its assessment requirements. You can find more detailed information on the annual fees associated with each NICEIC scheme on our schemes page.
It is not a legal requirement to join a certification body such as NICEIC to work as an electrician. However,it’s worth knowing that some customers, such as facilities businesses, landlords, and housing associations, do require professionals to be NICEIC-certified. Our badge gives customers confidence in the quality of the electrical work carried out. It also gives you access to the wide range of benefits and technical support services we offer.
Becoming certified with NICEIC is a great way to get recognition for your business. Our application process can be as quick as seven to eight weeks if you meet all the scheme requirements and meet our assessment criteria.
You will need to renew your certification every 12 months. Don’t worry, we'll send you an email eight weeks before your assessment is due asking you to get in touch with our scheduling team.
Read more about your assessment.
Assessment requirements depend on the work you undertake. All assessments require your business to show relevant paperwork such as:
  • appropriate insurance
  • complaints procedure
  • qualifications
  • training records for employees.
Your assessor will also need access to completed works relevant to your business’s certification to demonstrate competence.
Choosing which certification or registration body to go with is a personal preference. NICEIC is the UK’s largest certification body for electrical professionals and has been an established industry name for 70 years. Our badge is familiar with householders, landlords, and businesses, and many commercial specifiers and local authorities are required to use NICEIC-certified businesses.
There is no legal requirement for electricians to be certified by a certification or registration body such as NICEIC. However, being NICEIC-certified is seen across the industry as an endorsement of your professional standards, and gives you access to a wide range of benefits.
