Contractor
Register - Hazardous

How to gain approval?

Contractors must first achieve registration to the Approved Contractor Scheme.

The process to extend the scope of approval follows three simple steps:

  • Application for approval is made by the contractor
  • Assessment of the contractor’s competence is undertaken by NICEIC
  • Approval is granted by NICEIC and maintained by the contractor

NICEIC will review the application and appoint an Assessing Engineer to conduct the onsite assessment to assess competence of the contractor. Contractors will need to demonstrate their competence by:

  • Employing CompEx qualified supervisors and operatives
  • Providing adequate supervision of work
  • Holding the correct British/International Standards
  • Maintaining a record of all Hazardous Area work undertaken
  • Issuing the correct documentation for the work completed
  • Holding adequate Public Liability insurance appropriate for the type of work undertaken

All potential Hazardous Area contractors will be required to undergo training in the competency requirements for Hazardous Areas (CompEx) and to maintain their knowledge on an ongoing basis through refreshment training every three years. To find a course near you visit www.compex.org.uk.

If, for any reason, the contractor does not meet the Scheme requirements, NICEIC will provide full support to enable them to achieve compliance and gain approval. Once approval is achieved, it is maintained through a programme of annual assessment visits and through update training every three years. The Hazardous Areas Application Form can be found in the My NICEIC secure area under 'Hazardous Areas'.
