Periodic Inspection Reporting Scheme (DPIR)

Periodic Inspection Reporting Scheme (DPIR)

The NICEIC DPIR Scheme is designed to provide domestic contractors that perform periodic inspection reporting in dwellings with independent recognition of their skills and to provide a definitive register of inspectors to householders, landlords and other specifiers.

Landlords in particular should ensure that regular periodic inspections are undertaken to ensure the safety of tenants is not compromised.

Periodic inspection is the inspection of the condition of an existing electrical installation, to identify in order of priority any deficiencies against the national safety standard for electrical installations.

A periodic inspection will:

  • reveal if any electrical circuits or equipment is overloaded
  • find any potential electrical shock risks and fire hazards in the installation
  • identify any defective DIY electrical work
  • highlight any lack of earthing or bonding

Tests are also carried out on wiring and associated fixed electrical equipment to check that it is safe and a schedule of circuits is developed during the inspection.

Who is the DPIR Scheme applicable to?

The DPIR Scheme is open to any electrical contractor that has achieved NICEIC Domestic Installer status and  that wish to extend their scope of approval to include Domestic Periodic Inspection Reporting (DPIR).

DPIR work requires a high level of competence and applicants must have extensive knowledge and experience of electrical installations and related regulations.

Applicants must also have sound knowledge of testing procedures, test values and a thorough understanding of Periodic Inspection Report compilation.

What are the immediate benefits of NICEIC Registration?

In addition to the benefits already enjoyed by NICEIC Domestic Installers, the DPIR Scheme will provide:

  • Assurance to clients, specifiers, licensing authorities and others that the business is reputable, reliable and capable to undertake periodic inspection to assess compliance with the national safety standard
  • Access to inspection work from housing associations and local authorities that will only employ contractors with recognised inspection and reporting capabilities
  • An assurance to clients that the inspection work is covered by NICEIC’s Complaints Procedure and Guarantee of Standards Scheme
  • Identification of recognised inspection capability in the NICEIC register of contractors, which is widely used by purchasers of inspection services.

How to gain Registration?

Contractors must first achieve registration to the Domestic Installer Scheme, to find out how click here for details.

The process to extend the scope of approval follows three simple steps:

  • Application for PDPIR approval is made by the contractor
  • Assessment of the contractors’ competence is undertaken by NICEIC
  • Approval is granted by NICEIC and maintained by the contractor

In addition to the requirements of the Domestic Installer Scheme applicants will need:

  • a minimum of two sites, for which a DPIR has been completed and must be available and will be assessed during a half day visit
  • systems in place to manage the issue and control of documentation such as certificates and test reports

Applicants are encouraged to complete the NICEIC DPIR course or City & Guilds 2391 course prior to their assessment.
