Former Olympic athlete Kriss Akabusi MBE lit up a room of more than 500 electricians with an inspiring talk at this year’s Live South event.

Akabusi made headlines when he powered through the final leg of the 4X400 metres relay at the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo to secure Gold for Great Britain.
Now a motivational speaker and businessman, he energised the audience with his experience of what it takes to get to the top.

“A career as an electrician is very similar to that of an athlete,” commented Akabusi.
“One day you could be working on your own and competing against others in your area and then suddenly a big job comes up and you all have to work together and in collaboration to get the job done.

“You have to adapt. You need to motivate yourself to achieve the best and then change that attitude to work as part of a team.”
In addition to Akabusi, Live South also featured various presentations and breakout sessions throughout the day, with a large focus on the upcoming 18th Edition.
Actors from Corporate Drama performed a series of improvisations that depict the challenges of coping with periods of

change, while NICEIC and ELECSA’s technical experts, Darren Staniforth and Jake Green, discussed the key changes expected to be in the BS7671 18th Edition of the wiring regulations.
Former Sky News presenter Juliet Mann was moderator for the day.

Attendees also benefited from some great deals in the lively exhibition hall, featuring some of the biggest names in the industry including sponsors Bosch Power Tools, Elite Security Products, Scolmore and Tradepoint.
Mark Smith, Marketing Director at NICEIC and ELECSA added: “Our Live Events are a great way to meet contractors and discuss the latest news and initiatives within the industry.
“I believe that this has been our best Live event, to date. With an eclectic mix of presenters and exhibitors from across the industry, there was something for everyone.
“It was also a great opportunity to demonstrate our forward thinking approach of communicating with our contractors on the day. Our events app, provided information on exclusive offers, schedules, information on the speakers, exhibitors’ details, and included an entertaining, achievements based game.”
