Non-licensed Works with Asbestos 

A one-day course for those needing to fulfil the minimum requirement under the Control of Asbestos Regulations (CAR) 2006 for works with non-licensable asbestos.

What will you learn?

■ The properties of asbestos and its effect on health

■ The types, uses and likely occurrence of asbestos and ACMs

■ The general procedures to be followed to deal with an emergency

■ How to avoid the risks from asbestos

Who should attend?

Those whose work will knowingly disturb Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs). Maintenance workers, their supervisors and those who carry out asbestos sampling and analysis. It should be given in addition to the Asbestos Awareness training.

Note: This training can only be taken following Asbestos Awareness training delivered by UKATA or delivered as a full stand-alone course that includes Asbestos Awareness.

The course programme

■ Operations which could result in asbestos exposure

■ The importance of preventive controls to minimise exposure

■ How to make suitable and sufficient risk assessments

■ The control limit and the purpose of air monitoring

■ Safe work practices, control measures and protective equipment

■ Maintenance of control measures

■ Procedures for recording, reporting and correcting defects

■ The appropriate purpose, choice and correct selection of suitable RPE

■ The correct use, cleaning, maintenance and safe storage of RPE and PPE

■ Hygiene requirements

■ Decontamination, waste handling and emergency procedures

■ Work requiring a HSE licence

■ An introduction to the relevant regulations and approved codes of practice

■ Use of decontamination facilities

■ Use of PPE, particularly RPE

■ Construction of mini-enclosures and use of control techniques

Course delivery can take place at any UKATA approved training venue.

Benefits

Successful candidates will fulfil the legal minimum requirement as detailed in the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006. They will be knowledgeable on the presence of asbestos and understand how to protect themselves from exposure to it.
